Friends only

You can only message people you're friends with on boopr. No message requests from strangers, no unknown senders, no inbox full of people you've never met. If someone can message you, it's because you added each other.

Blocking or unfriending someone stops messages both ways, immediately. Our servers simply refuse to carry them. Unfriending doesn't erase the conversation you already had; it just ends it.

What's free, what's boopr+

Text, photos, and GIFs are free for every account. Voice messages, video messages, and albums (several photos in one message) are boopr+ features, because they're the ones with real storage and delivery costs.

Read receipts and typing

Both are toggles in Settings › Privacy, and both are mutual: a friend sees that you've read their message, or that you're typing, only if you both have the toggle on. Turn yours off and it goes quiet in both directions.

Disappearing messages

Any conversation can have a timer. Turn it on and messages delete themselves after they've been seen and the timer runs out. It's per conversation, so your chat with one friend can disappear while every other conversation stays put.

Muting a conversation vs muting a person

These are two different switches, and it's worth knowing which one you're flipping.

  • Muting a conversation, in Messages, silences that chat's notifications and badge. The messages still arrive; boopr just stops tapping you on the shoulder about them.
  • Muting a person, from the Friends screen, hides their posts from your feed. It has nothing to do with messages.

Screenshots aren't silent

Screenshot alerts cover chats the same way they cover the feed. If a friend screenshots or records your conversation, you get an alert, usually within seconds. More on screenshots.

What a notification shows

Nothing. A message notification just says "New message": no text, no photo, not even the sender's name. Anyone glancing at your lock screen learns only that somebody wrote to you.

Your history, and new phones

Messages stay until you delete them. There's no forced expiry and no quiet cleanup; a conversation from two years ago is still there if you never touched it.

If you lose your phone and restore with your recovery phrase, your conversations come back: the words right away, and the photos, videos, and voice messages inside them reload as you open them. Anything that expired or was deleted stays gone.

Deleting

  • Delete a conversation and it's removed from your device.
  • Unfriend someone and no new messages can flow either way, but the history you already have isn't deleted.
  • Delete your account and your messages are deleted on both sides, yours and your friends'.

A message or a boop?

They're built for different moods. A boop is a quick, playful nudge: a photo or short video that disappears once your friend has seen it. A message is a conversation that stays. Boop someone to say "thinking of you"; message them when you actually want to talk.

Only you and your friend can read them. We can't read your messages. That's the point. What we can see is that a message went from you to a friend, and when, because we have to deliver it. The full picture is on What's private.
